The three Corniches: the Riviera’s finest day on the road

From Nice to Menton via the Lower, Middle and Great Corniche: our one-day itinerary and the stops worth making.

Between Nice and the Italian border, three parallel roads cling to the cliffs, each at a different height. Driving all three in one day shows you the Riviera from every angle: the sea at wheel level, then hilltop villages, then the whole horizon from above.

Morning: the Lower Corniche

Leave Nice early, before the traffic. The Lower Corniche runs past Villefranche-sur-Mer and its bay, then Beaulieu. Stop at Cap Ferrat for the coastal path or a coffee facing the water.

Midday: the Middle Corniche and Èze

Climb to Èze, a medieval village perched 400 metres above the sea. Park below the village and walk up to the exotic garden. Several restaurants offer breathtaking views for lunch.

Afternoon: the Great Corniche

Built on the old Roman road, the Great Corniche offers the most spectacular panoramas, especially from the Èze viewpoint and La Turbie. Descend to Monaco or carry on to Menton for sunset.

Our tips

  • Choose a convertible and a weekday outside July and August.
